J. Edgar Anderson Furniture has
its roots in Sweden and Sioux City,
Iowa, but its customers would probably say that the real roots of its 80 years of success lie in prices and service.
It all started in Sioux City, Iowa in 1881, when August Anderson - whose Swedish ancestors were known in the "old country" as creaters of fine furniture - established one of the largest furniture stores in the midwest. He had four sons as apprentices; one of the sons, J. Edgar, moved to Glendale in 1924 and opened his own shop at 612 East Broadway.
J. Edgar operated the store for the next 31 years, gaining a city-wide reputation for selling high-quality American-made furniture at excellent prices. During that time, J. Edgar's daughter, Shirley, married Bruce Roberts. Roberts became involved in his father-in-law's business, taking over when J. Edgar retired. All told, Roberts put 40 years into the furniture store, expanding and improving along the way, and was responsible for the construction of a new, larger location at 212 North Glendale Avenue.
Throughout, J. Edgar Anderson Furniture defined its business philosophy with three key words: quality, service, and price. Over the years, the operation has grown to include furniture for living rooms, dining rooms, home offices, family rooms, and bedrooms, along with rugs, giftware, and a clock shop with a huge selection of grandfather, mantel, and wall clocks. Customers have been coming back for generations because they know that with mark-downs of 30 to 70 percent on everything including J. Edgar's prices for the quality.
The elder Roberts have since retired, but their two son's, Jim and John, have continued the family tradition marking the family's fourth generation of furniture retailers. Like their grandfather, J. Edgar Anderson, they take pride in carrying the best lines of American-made furniture and in providing the kind of friendly, one-on-one customer service upon which the business was built.
